After over a decade of dispute, Square One's photomontages assisted the mitigative design and ultimate approval of the St. Helena Safeway expansion. After years of community opposition, Safeway's proposal in 2000 featured a thoughtfully designed main façade, but neglected to objectively consider the impact from other views.
Knowing that the view facing a residential street was a concern to the community, Square One's photomontages revealed a potential issue with the rear massing of the design before it was submitted for review. A newly mitigated design was submitted in the EIR, and the project was finally approved.
